The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming appears especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
